Five Drivers to Watch at Talladega

By Jared Turner Martin Truex Jr. has accomplished virtually everything else this year, so why not add a restrictor-plate victory to his crowded 2017 resume? A four-time Talladega winner, Brad Keselowski has been NASCAR’s most consistent restrictor-plate racer over the past few years. There’s no track in NASCAR where Dale Earnhardt Jr. has been more successful or is more adored than Talladega. Jamie McMurray, whose quiet consistency in 2017 has taken him farther than many expected, is one of NASCAR’s most underrated restrictor-plate racers. Thanks to wins in the two most recent restrictor-plate races, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. arrives at Talladega in the…

Talladega Preview: A Race That Will Separate the Contenders From the Pretenders

By Jared Turner Buckle your seatbelts. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs are about to get wild. With one race down and two to go in the Round of 12, Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway has all the potential in the world to be a game-changer. As the only restrictor-plate race in the playoffs, Talladega narrows the playing field between the haves and the have-nots in such a way that virtually anyone can end up in Victory Lane. All things considered, a more equal playing field is not a bad thing. However, the downside to competing at the high-speed 2.66-mile track…

Just Sayin’: Racetracks Are For Cars, Not Stairs

By Jared Turner One of the oddest and most inexcusable moments of the 2017 NASCAR season occurred over the weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway when current driver Erik Jones and former driver turned NASCAR on NBC announcer Jeff Burton plowed into a staircase — yes, you read that correctly — while driving the NBC demonstration car on Saturday for a segment airing as part of the network’s coverage of the race weekend. The stairs, which obviously weren’t supposed to be out on the track at that time, are used to let fans and officials get from the stands to the infield when…

Martin Truex Jr. Is Still the Championship Favorite

By Jared Turner Just when it seemed that Martin Truex Jr. might be slightly vulnerable in his pursuit of his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship, the Furniture Row Racing driver threw cold water on any such notion with a convincing victory in the Bank of America 500. His berth in the Round of 8 now 100 percent secure, Truex can take the next two weekends and simply focus on piling up even more playoffs points for the next round — which he’s already poised to begin with a substantial lead, thanks to his numerous race wins and stage wins this…

An Exhausted Kyle Busch Demonstrated How to Persevere

By Jared Turner Kyle Busch started Sunday’s race red hot, thanks to wins in two of the past three weeks. He finished Sunday red hot, too — literally. After smacking the wall multiple times and struggling throughout, a 29th-place finish proved to be the least of Busch’s concerns when, immediately after the race, he laid down on the ground and had to be treated for a heat stroke. Thankfully, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver turned out to be OK. “After I first tore it up, it was just a handful from there,” Busch said of his damaged car. “Literally as soon as…

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Isn’t Happy About Missing the Playoffs

By Jared Turner Even though Dale Earnhardt Jr. has finished relatively well the past two races when comparing them to most of 2017, NASCAR’s 14-time most popular driver is none too pleased about missing the playoffs in his last season of full-time racing. Asked at Charlotte Motor Speedway if missing the playoffs actually enabled him to enjoy the season’s stretch run more than he otherwise might, Earnhardt Jr. was quick to squash the suggestion. “I think that the fans would be having more fun if we were racing for the championship, and then I would be having more fun interacting with them…
