Jimmie Johnson Takes Texas

By John Sturbin (NASCAR Wire Service) FORT WORTH, Texas—Jimmie Johnson continued his recent domination of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at Texas Motor Speedway Saturday night, rallying after a late pit stop for a victory in the 19th annual Duck Commander 500. Johnson, the six-time NSCS champion, took the lead on Lap 321 of the scheduled 334 when he drove under and past Jamie McMurray and Kevin Harvick exiting the dogleg of TMS’ high-banked, 1.5-mile quad-oval. The final 14 laps featured a battle between Johnson and Harvick, the reigning NSCS champion, who finished second despite scraping the Turn 4 wall on Lap 331. Johnson,…

Race Preview: Will Fireworks Fly at Texas?

By Jared Turner They say everything’s bigger in Texas. That includes that speeds at Texas Motor Speedway. Already one of NASCAR’s fastest tracks, the 1.5-mile Fort Worth venue reached into rarefied air last fall when Tony Stewart shattered the old track record with a lap of 200.111 mph in the second round of knockout qualifying. Stewart’s lap made Texas just the fourth track in NASCAR history to have a qualifying record set with a speed in excess of 200 mph. As the Sprint Cup Series prepares for its Texas return, Stewart believes the key to going fast this weekend will be being…

It’s Time for Tony Stewart to Retire

By Jared Turner There comes a time in every NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver’s life when he must ask himself a simple yet poignant question. “Have I accomplished pretty much everything I possibly can in this sport?” If the answer is no, there is every reason to race on. If the answer is yes, there is every reason to quit. Jeff Gordon asked himself this question before announcing in January that this would be his last season of full-time competition in NASCAR’s top series. Despite having just wrapped up one of his best seasons in recent memory, the four-time Sprint Cup Series champion…

Sideways Sam: Can Hornish Jr. Get on Track

By Aaron Burns Sam Hornish Jr. was a star in the Verizon IndyCar Series. He was a star in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, too. So, what’s happened? Hornish’s results in open-wheel and lower-tier NASCAR series didn’t translate to success in his first Sprint Cup go-around from 2008-‘10. That was excusable. He was still getting used to the heavier Cup cars. But Hornish hasn’t gotten up to speed this time around, either, and it’s a mystery as to why. Hornish’s No. 9 Twisted Tea Ford finished a respectable 12th in February’s Daytona 500. In the five races thereafter, he wound up 21st, 24th,…

Make Up: Gordon, Keselowski Should Resolve Feud

After a rare NASCAR off-weekend to celebrate Easter – Jeff Gordon and his wife and kids marked the occasion by taking part in the annual White House egg roll and egg hunt – the four-time champ is ready to get back to his hunt for a fifth and final championship this Saturday night at Texas Motor Speedway. The last time we saw Gordon at TMS – last November’s Chase for the Sprint Cup race – he was first punted late in the event by Brad Keselowski, and then got into one of the most memorable and large-scale fistfights the sport has seen…
