Brad Keselowski dominates chaotic Sprint Cup race at Daytona

July 2, 2016 By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Brad Keselowski had an excellent solution for the massive wrecks that scrambled the finishing order of Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway. He stayed ahead of all of them. Leading 115 of 161 laps in the No. 2 Team Penske Ford, Keselowski sped away from his pursuers after a restart in overtime and posted his third victory of the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season in thoroughly convincing fashion. The victory was Keselowski’s first at Daytona and the 20th of his career, and it reinforced his…

Almirola edges Allgaier for XFINITY Series win at Daytona

July 1, 2016 By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Aric Almirola won his second NASCAR XFINITY Series race by much less than a nose. But to the driver of the No. 98 Fred Biagi-owned Ford, that was a vast improvement over his first victory in the series—when he wasn’t even in the car when the race ended. In Friday night’s Subway Firecracker 400 at Daytona International Speedway, Almirola was inches ahead of Justin Allgaier off the final corner in overtime when NASCAR called the eighth caution of the race and froze the field because of a wild wreck…

Milestone Moment: Richard Petty’s 200th Career Win Came at Daytona

President Ronald Reagan was among the estimated 80,000 race fans at Daytona International Speedway on July 4, 1984, when Richard Petty scored his 200th victory in NASCAR’s premier stock car series. The event is widely recognized as the most significant in the history of American auto racing as Reagan became the first sitting U.S. president to attend a major motorsports event and Petty achieved what turned out to be the final victory of his storied career. President Reagan gave the command to start the engines via phone from Air Force One while en route to the speedway, and all eyes were on…

Five to Watch at Daytona: Junior, Hamlin Are Favorites

5 to watch Fresh off a thrilling and wildly popular win at Sonoma, Tony Stewart is set for his final start at Daytona – where he’s a four-time winner of the track’s July race. After sitting out what would have been his final Daytona 500, Stewart won’t be lacking motivation this weekend. Dale Earnhardt Jr. won last July’s race at Daytona in dominant fashion but has failed to impress in two restrictor-plate starts this year. This will be Earnhardt’s first plate race since 2014 without his beloved plate car dubbed “Amelia,” which he crashed at Talladega in May. After winning this year’s…

Daytona Preview: Expect High Speeds, Potential for Wrecks

To get an idea of just how wild Saturday night’s race under the lights at Daytona International Speedway might be, it requires merely looking back on last year’s running of the annual mid-summer classic at The World Center of Racing. One ill-advised move on the final lap sent Austin Dillon’s No. 3 Chevrolet sailing airborne into the frontstretch catchfence and the entire sport holding its collective breath until the moment Dillon climbed out of his battered machine. Thankfully, Dillon walked away with just bruises, but the violent nature of the wreck was a stark reminder of the imminent dangers that accompany restrictor-plate…

Just Sayin’: Underestimating Stewart Is Perilous

By Jared Turner Underestimating Stewart Is Perilous Just when you thought Tony Stewart might coast to the proverbial finish line in this his final season, think again. Stewart, who missed the first part of the season with a broken back and has mostly struggled since his return, seemingly came out of nowhere at Sonoma Raceway to score what could ultimately be the final victory of his roller-coaster career. And Stewart didn’t just win; he did so in epic fashion by knocking a competitor – in this case Denny Hamlin – out of the way in the final on the final lap. While…
