Just Sayin’: Charlotte Should Scrap the Fall Night Race in Favor of Day Racing

By Jared Turner For the second year in a row, the fall Chase race at Charlotte Motor Speedway was run on Sunday during daytime hours after rain forced NASCAR and track officials to postpone the race from its originally scheduled Saturday night start time. Call it pure coincidence, bad timing or something else if you wish, but any time weather results in a race being pushed back a day in consecutive years, it’s never a bad idea to reevaluate the best day and start time for an event to be held. In the case of this year, no one could have predicted,…

Jimmie Johnson triumphs at Charlotte as five Chase drivers fall on hard times

Oct. 9, 2016 By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service CONCORD, N.C. – After Sunday’s victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Jimmie Johnson can proclaim justifiably “The Boys are Back in Town.” But for five other Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers, all of whom finished 30th or worse in the rain-delayed Bank of America 500, the race ended in a medley of dire straits. Taking the lead from Matt Kenseth after a restart on Lap 317 of 334, Johnson pulled away to win by 1.474 seconds over the driver of the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. Johnson put his No. 48…

Late pass gives Logano XFINITY win, as Chase field cut to eight

Oct. 9, 2016 By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service CONCORD, N.C. – If stealing a race were against the law, there would be an arrest warrant out for Joey Logano on Sunday night. Grabbing the lead from Kyle Larson after a restart on Lap 183 of 200, Logano held off a charging Elliott Sadler by .462 seconds to win the Drive for the Cure 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the event that trimmed the inaugural NASCAR XFINITY Chase field from 12 drivers to eight. Larson, who led 165 laps and at one point had the lead lap to…

Charlotte Preview: The Round of 12 Begins in Chase for the Sprint Cup

By Jared Turner And then there were 12. With last Sunday’s elimination race at Dover International Speedway, Chris Buescher, Tony Stewart, Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray all fell out of contention for the 2016 Sprint Cup title. Moving on to the next round and still in the hunt for the sport’s biggest prize are Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano, Chase Elliott, Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards, Kurt Busch, Austin Dillon and Kevin Harvick. Of the dozen remaining championship hopefuls, only Dillon and Elliott – a Sprint Cup Series rookie – are winless entering Saturday night’s…

Just Sayin’: It’s Time for Chase Underdog Austin Dillon to Step Up

By Jared Turner Austin Dillon Has To Step It Up To Advance Of the 12 remaining drivers in contention for the 2016 Sprint Cup Series championship, there’s one clear underdog of the bunch – and, hands-down, it’s Austin Dillon. While each of the other 11 championship hopefuls has recorded no fewer than six top-five finishes this year, Dillon has just four top fives. Even more concerning for the oldest grandson of veteran team owner Richard Childress is that he hasn’t come home with a top-five finish since the August race at Bristol Motor Speedway. In the six races since Bristol, Dillon has…
