Kyle Busch completes Martinsville sweep with Cup victory

April 3, 2016 By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Kyle Busch came to Martinsville Speedway this weekend with no grandfather clock trophies from the shortest and tightest of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series short tracks. He left with two clocks after completing an unprecedented Martinsville sweep in Sunday’s STP 500, and, appropriately, the first question he radioed to his crew after his celebratory burnouts dealt with telling time. “What time is it?” crowed the reigning series champion, who a day earlier had won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Martinsville in his own equipment. Then Busch answered…

What We Know: 2016 a Mixed Bag for Hendrick

The Gibbs cars are the toast of the Sprint Cup Series While it’s still too early in the 2016 season to jump to too many conclusions, this much is obvious: Joe Gibbs Racing has been the team to beat so far. After five races, JGR has one win – in the form of Denny Hamlin’s thrilling Daytona 500 triumph – and three of its four drivers in the top five in points. Matt Kenseth, the lone JGR driver outside the top five, has been fast at just about every race in 2016 but has simply been snake-bitten by bad luck. After JGR’s…

I’m Just Sayin’: Busch Should Meet with Media

By Jared Turner Drivers had better meet media obligations Scrutinized for claiming over his in-car radio that NASCAR “fixes” races, Kyle Busch avoided being penalized for questioning the integrity of the sport at Auto Club Speedway. Busch did not avoid penalty for blowing off his post-race media obligations, however. After losing the lead on the final lap of the XFINITY Series race due to a tire failure that Busch believed should have triggered a caution, Busch chose not to come into the media center – a requirement of second-place finishers unless otherwise instructed by NASCAR. Busch’s failure to comply resulted in a…

Jeff Gordon Will Be Missed at Martinsville Speedway

By Jerry Bonkowski It finally will hit home Sunday. Jeff Gordon truly is retired. You’re probably wondering how I could have missed Gordon’s retirement at the end of last season. I didn’t miss it, but I admit I’ve been in a bit of denial nonetheless. Sure, Gordon missed this season’s first five races at Daytona, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Fontana. But no other racetrack will Gordon be missed the most than Martinsville Speedway. The half-mile bullring in southern Virginia was Gordon’s best track performance-wise, period. In 46 career Sprint Cup starts, Gordon earned nine wins, 29 top-fives, 37 top-10 finishes and…
