Johnson wins, ties Earnhardt Sr. with 76th victory

Feb. 28, 2016 By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service HAMPTON, Ga. – With wrecks erupting behind him, Jimmie Johnson took the checkered flag in overtime under caution in Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway—and then he remembered. Almost lost in the euphoria of Johnson’s second straight victory at the 1.54-mile track was the realization that, with his 76th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory, he had tied the late Dale Earnhardt for seventh on the all-time wins list. But as the No. 48 Chevrolet rolled around the track on its victory lap, heading in a clockwise direction a la…

Just Sayin’: Hendrick Motorsports Struggles at Daytona

By Jared Turner To have been the focus of so much hype during Speedweeks, Hendrick Motorsports laid a bit of an egg in the 500. Of the four Hendrick drivers, the best finisher was Kasey Kahne in 13th. Hendrick drivers Chase Elliott and Dale Earnhardt Jr. both wrecked on their own accord, and Jimmie Johnson, much like Kahne, was basically a non-factor. While a rough Daytona 500 is certainly no cause for alarm for an organization as potent as Hendrick, it did indicate perhaps that the edge the Hendrick drivers – Earnhardt Jr., in particular – have held at plate tracks in…

Darrell Waltrip’s Racing Hero Was AJ Foyt

By Keith Waltz During an impressive 28- year NASCAR career, Darrell Waltrip, a former driver and team owner, won three Cup championships and logged 84 wins before turning his attention to broadcasting in 2001. Waltrip is known as one of the most vibrant personalities of NASCAR's 66-year history, aggressive behind the wheel and very insightful behind the microphone. Long before becoming one of the sport's most iconic stars, the Owensboro, Ky. native patterned himself after a legendary champion of open-wheel IndyCar racing and winner of the Indianapolis 500 four times in 1961, '64, '67 and '77. “When I was growing up, I…

Daytona Preview: It’s a Wide-Open Field

By Jared Turner In the Super Bowl, two teams have an opportunity to win. In the Super Bowl of NASCAR – the Daytona 500 – the number of contenders is far greater. Thanks to the horsepower-choking restrictor plates that keep drivers bunched in tight packs all day long at Daytona and Talladega and erase the advantages normally held by NASCAR’s top teams, numerous drivers enter the sport’s biggest race with at least a fighting chance of ending the day in Victory Lane. In fact, as rookie Trevor Bayne proved with his shocking Daytona 500 triumph for Wood Brothers Racing in 2011, Daytona’s…
