I’m Just Sayin’: Busch Should Meet with Media

By Jared Turner Drivers had better meet media obligations Scrutinized for claiming over his in-car radio that NASCAR “fixes” races, Kyle Busch avoided being penalized for questioning the integrity of the sport at Auto Club Speedway. Busch did not avoid penalty for blowing off his post-race media obligations, however. After losing the lead on the final lap of the XFINITY Series race due to a tire failure that Busch believed should have triggered a caution, Busch chose not to come into the media center – a requirement of second-place finishers unless otherwise instructed by NASCAR. Busch’s failure to comply resulted in a…

Jeff Gordon Will Be Missed at Martinsville Speedway

By Jerry Bonkowski It finally will hit home Sunday. Jeff Gordon truly is retired. You’re probably wondering how I could have missed Gordon’s retirement at the end of last season. I didn’t miss it, but I admit I’ve been in a bit of denial nonetheless. Sure, Gordon missed this season’s first five races at Daytona, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Fontana. But no other racetrack will Gordon be missed the most than Martinsville Speedway. The half-mile bullring in southern Virginia was Gordon’s best track performance-wise, period. In 46 career Sprint Cup starts, Gordon earned nine wins, 29 top-fives, 37 top-10 finishes and…

Johnson powers past Harvick for win at Fontana

March 20, 2016 By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service FONTANA, Calif. – Jimmie Johnson won the battle between hometown heroes on Sunday, outdueling Kevin Harvick in overtime at Auto Club Speedway. “Awesome teamwork, boys!” Johnson shouted on his radio after taking the 77th checkered flag of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career, breaking a tie with the late Dale Earnhardt for seventh on the all-time victory list. “There’s nothing like winning at home.” The six-time series champion from El Cajon got the chance he needed when Kyle Busch blew a tire and hit the Turn 3 wall on Lap 198 of a…

Austin Dillon saves fuel, wins XFINITY race at Fontana

March 19, 2016 By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service FONTANA, Calif. – Seconds after crossing the finish line .715 seconds ahead of runner-up Kyle Busch, Austin Dillon summed up Saturday’s TreatMyClot.com 300 by Janssen in one short sentence. “I’d rather be lucky than good,” Dillon chortled on his team radio after ending evading Busch’s last-ditch attempt to pinch the winning No. 2 Chevrolet into the outside wall at Auto Club Speedway. And that was just the final stanza of a crazy final lap that saw: 1) Busch slow to a crawl, short on fuel; 2) Daniel Suárez take the lead from his…

What We Know From Phoenix: Harvick is Unstoppable

By Jared Turner The JGR train continues While Joe Gibbs Racing’s Carl Edwards losing to Kevin Harvick by a margin of just .01 seconds at the finish line was a tough defeat for JGR to swallow in the Good Sam 500, it was still a terrific day overall for the organization at Phoenix International Raceway as JGR’s Edwards, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch finished 2-3-4, respectively. With four races in the books this season, JGR has three drivers in the top six in Sprint Cup Series points. While the Huntersville, North Carolina-based company’s only win of 2016 so far came courtesy of…
