Just Sayin’: Chase Elliott’s Will Overcome MIS Mishaps

Chase Elliott Shouldn’t Beat Himself Up Sunday’s event at Michigan International Speedway was déjà vu all over again for Chase Elliott, who just like in the June race at MIS finished second after spinning his tires and losing the lead on a late restart. The only difference about this time was that the winner was Kyle Larson, a driver who like Elliott was seeking his first win in NASCAR’s top series. Chase, the son of 1988 Cup Series champ Bill Elliott, was understandably pointing the finger at no one but himself after his latest shortcoming. Let’s hope that Chase quickly moves on…

Kyle Larson captures first Sprint Cup victory at Michigan

August 28, 2016 By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service BROOKLYN, Mich. – In the last few laps of Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway, tears began to well up in Kyle Larson’s eyes. When Larson subsequently took the checkered flag to win the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race of his career, the emotion was all but overwhelming—and for good reason. The victory came in Larson’s 99th start in the series, long after most observers expected Larson to record his first win. It also broke a 99-race drought for Chip Ganassi Racing, dating to Jamie McMurray’s victory at Talladega in…

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular finished .534 seconds ahead of his Richard Childress Racing teammate Brendan Gaughan after two late restarts, including a green-while-checkered that pushed the race to 48 laps from its scheduled 45. Brett Moffitt beats Red Horse teammate to checkers at Michigan

August 27, 2016 By Reid Spencer NASCAR Wire Service BROOKLYN, Mich. – In five NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts, Brett Moffitt had never led a lap. But in Saturday’s Careers for Veterans 200 at Michigan International Speedway, Moffitt picked the perfect time to take the point for the first time. Powering around Red Horse Racing teammate Timothy Peters and five-time series winner William Byron off the second corner of the final lap at the two-mile track, Moffitt held off Peters by .098 seconds to win a NASCAR national series race for the first time. Moffitt’s victory, however, left Shane Huffman, Peters’…

Driver Feature: Mike McDowell Is Enjoying a Full-Time Ride

By Joseph Wolkin It has been a transition year for Michael McDowell. His No. 95 team combined efforts with Circle Sport Racing to become Leavine Family Racing. Evidently, the move gave them a charter, and now, he is on pace for his best Sprint Cup season. What’s the biggest difference you’ve seen since you joined the organization? “The biggest difference is just going from part-time to full-time. Our first schedule was around 20 races, and then obviously being full-time this year. It’s been a steady increase. It takes a lot to go from 20 to 36 races. We had a lot of personnel…

Michigan Preview: The New Aero Package Could Provide Preview of 2017

By Jared Turner This weekend, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers will compete with a reduced downforce package for the third time this season. This aerodynamic package – which most notably features a smaller rear spoiler than the one used with the baseline 2016 rules package – will almost certainly be used full time in 2017 if all goes relatively well in Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway, Drivers debuted the reduced downforce aero package back in June when the Sprint Cup Series last raced at MIS. The package was also used at Kentucky Speedway in early July. Not surprisingly, reviews…
